Biography
Paul Abraham was born on 2 November 1892 in Apatin in the Kingdom of Hungary and died on 6 May 1960 in Hamburg. He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest and worked from 1927 as conductor at the city's municipal operetta theatre. His international breakthrough came in 1930 in Vienna with Viktoria und ihr Husar, followed in 1931 by Die Blume von Hawaii and in 1932 by Ball im Savoy; his operettas are known for combining waltz with jazz. After 1933 the Nazis suppressed his music as 'degenerate', and Abraham fled through several countries before emigrating to the United States in 1940. He returned to Germany in 1956 and died of cancer there in 1960.
