Biography

Patrick Süskind was born on 26 March 1949 in Ambach am Starnberger See; his father, Wilhelm Emanuel Süskind, was a writer and longtime contributor to the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He studied history in Munich from 1968 to 1974. In 1981 he made his debut as a playwright with the monologue "Der Kontrabass" ("The Double Bass"), first broadcast as a radio play and premiered the same year at Munich's Cuvilliés-Theater. His only novel to date, "Das Parfum" ("Perfume", 1985), became an international success with some 20 million copies sold and translations into 49 languages, and was filmed by Tom Tykwer in 2006. Süskind lives reclusively, avoids public appearances, and has declined several literary prizes.
