Biography

Patrick Hamilton was born on 17 March 1904 in Hassocks, Sussex, and died on 23 September 1962 in Sheringham, Norfolk. After attending Westminster School and a brief career as an actor, he established himself as a novelist from the 1920s onward and later turned to the stage as well. His best-known plays are the chamber thriller "Rope" (1929), which Alfred Hitchcock adapted into his 1948 film of the same name, and "Gas Light" (1938), whose title gave the English language the term "gaslighting." With novels such as "Hangover Square" (1941), Hamilton is regarded as a sharp observer of London's interwar demimonde.
