Biography
Patricia Highsmith was born Mary Patricia Plangman in 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas, and studied English literature with a minor in Latin at Barnard College in New York from 1938 to 1942; as early as 1945 her story „The Heroine“ received an O. Henry Award. Her first novel, „Strangers on a Train“, appeared in 1950, and Alfred Hitchcock's film version the following year brought her international attention. In 1952 she published the love story „The Price of Salt“ (later reissued as „Carol“) under the pseudonym Claire Morgan, and in 1955 the crime novel „The Talented Mr. Ripley“, followed by four further books about Tom Ripley through 1991. From 1963 Highsmith lived in Europe, first in England, from 1967 in France and from 1982 in Switzerland, and in 1990 was made an Officer of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She died in Locarno in 1995.
