Oskar Nedbal

1874 – 1930 · Czech

Biography

Oskar Nedbal was born on 26 March 1874 in Tábor, Bohemia, and studied violin at the Prague Conservatory and composition under Antonín Dvořák. As a violist, he was a founding member of the Bohemian String Quartet and led the Czech Philharmonic from 1896 to 1906. In 1907 he founded the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna, which he directed until 1919, and increasingly turned to composing operettas, including his greatest success, Polenblut. From 1923 he directed the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. Burdened by debt and facing a court case, Nedbal took his own life in Zagreb on 24 December 1930.
