Biography

Nikolaus Habjan was born in Graz in 1987 and studied music theatre directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 2006 to 2010. From 2008 he worked at Vienna's Schubert Theater, which he co-ran between 2009 and 2016. There, in 2012, he premiered a hand-puppet play he developed with Simon Meusburger about Spiegelgrund survivor Friedrich Zawrel, which won him the Nestroy Theatre Prize for best independent production. Habjan has since directed drama and opera productions at houses including the Burgtheater Vienna, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Semperoper Dresden, while continuing to perform as a puppeteer and whistling artist in his own productions.
