Biography

Nigel Osborne was born in Manchester in 1948 and studied composition with Egon Wellesz and Kenneth Leighton at Oxford and with Witold Rudziński in Warsaw, where he also worked at Polish Radio's experimental studio. From 1989 to 2012 he was Reid Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh. His works include the opera "The Electrification of the Soviet Union" as well as numerous chamber and orchestral pieces. Since leaving Edinburgh, Osborne has worked internationally as a composer and humanitarian aid worker, notably with children traumatised by war; he was awarded an MBE in 2003.
