Biography

Niels Vørsel, born in Aarhus in 1953, is a Danish screenwriter. With Lars von Trier he wrote the three films of the Europe trilogy: “The Element of Crime” (1984), “Epidemic” (1987), in which the two play themselves working on a new screenplay, and “Europa” (1991). The two also co-wrote the television series “Riget” (“The Kingdom”), whose seasons aired in 1994 and 1997; a third season, “The Kingdom Exodus”, followed in 2022. He was involved as a co-writer in Stephen King’s American remake “Kingdom Hospital” (2004). Vørsel received the Kjeld Abell Prize together with von Trier in 1993, and in 1995 the Carl Theodor Dreyer Prize and an honorary Bodil. The stage version of the series, titled “Hospital der Geister” in German, had its German-language premiere at Schauspielhaus Graz in 2023 and opened at Deutsches Theater Berlin in 2025.
