Biography
Nico Dostal was born in 1895 in Korneuburg, Lower Austria; the composer and military bandmaster Hermann Dostal was his uncle. After starting to study law in Vienna he turned to church music and, following the First World War, worked as a theatre conductor in Innsbruck, St. Pölten, Czernowitz and Salzburg, among other places. In 1924 he moved to Berlin, where he worked as an arranger for other composers and in light music. His first operetta, Clivia, brought his breakthrough in 1933; it was followed by works including Die Vielgeliebte (1934), Die ungarische Hochzeit and Manina (1942), as well as around 20 film scores. In 1944 he was included on the Nazi regime's Gottbegnadeten list of exempted artists. After the war he lived in Vienna and, from 1954, in Salzburg, which made him an honorary citizen in 1980 and where he died in 1981.
