Niccolò Jommelli

1714 – 1774 · Italian

Biography

Niccolò Jommelli was born in Aversa, near Naples, on 10 September 1714 and died in Naples on 25 August 1774. He trained at the Neapolitan conservatories of Sant'Onofrio and della Pietà dei Turchini, studying among others with Francesco Feo. His opera seria Ricimero re de' Goti, acclaimed in Rome in 1740, established him as a master of the genre, and in the following years he became one of Italy's most sought-after opera composers, with premieres in Venice, Turin, Rome and Vienna. From 1750 he served as deputy maestro of the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's in Rome, before moving in 1753 to the Württemberg court in Stuttgart as Hofkapellmeister, a post he held for sixteen years. His mature style, marked by expressive obbligato recitative and dense orchestration, contributed to the wider operatic reforms of the mid-eighteenth century.
