Biography
Myroslav Skoryk was born in Lviv in 1938; in 1948 his family was deported to Siberia amid Soviet repression and was able to return only after Stalin's death. He studied composition at the Lviv Conservatory and later at the Moscow Conservatory under Dmitri Kabalevsky. From 1963 he taught in Lviv, and from 1966 also at the Kyiv Conservatory, where composer Yevhen Stankovych was among his students. Skoryk wrote the film score for Sergei Parajanov's "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors," along with several concertos, ballets and the opera "Moses" (2001); he became internationally known above all for his short piece "Melody" (1982). He died in Kyiv in 2020, honored among other things as People's Artist of Ukraine and Hero of Ukraine.
