Biography
Yukio Mishima, born Hiraoka Kimitake, was born in Tokyo on 14 January 1925. His 1949 novel Confessions of a Mask brought him his literary breakthrough, followed by novels, stories and internationally staged plays such as Madame de Sade and the collection Five Modern Noh Plays, which fused traditional Noh forms with Western dramaturgy. In 1968 he founded the paramilitary Tatenokai to defend the imperial system and traditional values. On 25 November 1970 he and several followers seized a Self-Defense Forces command post in Tokyo, called for a coup, and then committed ritual suicide (seppuku). His final four-volume novel cycle, The Sea of Fertility, is regarded as his major work.
