Biography

Miroslav Krleža was born in Zagreb in 1893 and trained at military cadet schools in Pécs and Budapest before turning to literature. Over more than six decades he wrote poetry, novels, plays and essays, becoming the most influential voice in Croatian and Yugoslav literature of his time. His drama Messrs. Glembay (1929), about the decline of a wealthy bourgeois family, ranks alongside the novel The Return of Filip Latinovicz (1938) among his best-known works. After 1945 he directed the Lexicographical Institute in Zagreb and, as a critic of socialist realism, had a major influence on Yugoslav cultural policy. Krleža died in Zagreb in 1981.
