Biography

Mikhail Vasilyevich Matyushin was born in 1861 in Nizhny Novgorod and worked as a violinist in the Imperial Court Orchestra of Saint Petersburg from 1882 to 1913 before turning fully to composition and painting. From 1910 he and his partner, the painter and poet Elena Guro, were among the founders of the "Union of Youth", placing him at the centre of the Saint Petersburg avant-garde. In 1913 he composed the music for the Futurist opera "Victory over the Sun", for which Kazimir Malevich designed the sets and costumes. After the revolution he taught at the Vkhutein art workshops and the Institute of Artistic Culture (Inkhuk) in Leningrad, where he developed his theory of "expanded vision" (Zorved), summarised in a 1932 handbook on colour. He died on 14 October 1934 in Leningrad.
