Biography

Little is documented about the life of Mikhail Matveyevich Sokolovsky; he worked as a violinist in the orchestra of Moscow’s Maddox Theatre and taught singing. He became known for the music of the comic opera The Miller Who Was a Wizard, a Cheat and a Matchmaker, on a libretto by Alexander Ablesimov, which premiered in Moscow in 1779. For it, Sokolovsky arranged Russian folk-song melodies and composed the dramaturgically pivotal numbers himself. The score was long misattributed to Yevstigney Fomin but is now credited to him.
