Biography
Mikhail Lermontov was born in Moscow in 1814 and, after the early death of his mother, grew up with his grandmother on an estate in Penza province. As a guards officer, he was twice exiled to the Caucasus for verses critical of the regime, including his poem on Pushkin's death. With the novel A Hero of Our Time (1840) and the censored verse drama Masquerade (written around 1835), he created two key works of Russian Romanticism. In 1841, at the age of 26, he was shot dead in a duel in Pyatigorsk in the Caucasus by his former army comrade Nikolai Martynov.
