Biography
Michael Frayn was born on 8 September 1933 in London. After national service as a Russian interpreter, he studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, first languages and then philosophy, graduating in 1957. He then worked as a reporter and columnist for the Manchester Guardian and the Observer before turning to full-time writing. Alongside novels such as Headlong and Spies, he has written plays including the farce Noises Off (1982) and the history plays Copenhagen (1998), about Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, and Democracy (2003), about Willy Brandt. He won the 2000 Tony Award for Copenhagen, and in 2004 he was awarded Germany's Order of Merit, First Class.
