Biography
Maurice Maeterlinck was born on 29 August 1862 in Ghent and initially studied law before turning to literature during a stay in Paris, influenced by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. His verse drama "La Princesse Maleine" (1889) brought him his literary breakthrough; with "Pelléas and Mélisande" (1893) and the fairy play "The Blue Bird" (1908) he created key works of Symbolist theatre. In 1911 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his versatile literary output. Maeterlinck spent much of his later life in Normandy and died in Nice in May 1949.
