Biography
Matthew López, born in Panama City, Florida, in 1977, is an American playwright, screenwriter and director. He studied theatre at the University of South Florida. His first play, “The Whipping Man”, premiered at Luna Stage in Montclair, New Jersey, in 2006 and ran off-Broadway in 2011; later plays include “The Legend of Georgia McBride” (2014), “Reverberation” and “Zoey’s Perfect Wedding”. His greatest success came with the two-part “The Inheritance”, freely inspired by E. M. Forster’s novel “Howards End”: it premiered at London’s Young Vic in 2018, won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2019 and in 2021 made López the first Latino writer to win the Tony Award for Best Play. In 2023 he received the Drama Desk Award for the book of the Broadway musical “Some Like It Hot”, and the same year saw the release of the feature film “Red, White & Royal Blue”, which he directed and co-wrote. The German-language premiere of “The Inheritance”, titled “Das Vermächtnis”, took place at the Residenztheater in Munich in 2022.
