Biography

Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in London in 1797, the daughter of the philosopher William Godwin and the women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, who died shortly after the birth. In 1814 she left for France with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley; the two married in December 1816. In the summer of 1816, among Lord Byron's circle on Lake Geneva, she conceived the idea for Frankenstein, which was published anonymously in 1818. After Percy Shelley drowned in a sailing accident in Italy in 1822, she returned to England in 1823 and published further novels, among them Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826), Lodore (1835) and Falkner (1837); in 1839 she edited her husband's poems with extensive notes. She died in London in 1851; since the 1970s her work beyond Frankenstein has been reread and reassessed.
