Biography
Mary Coyle Chase was born in Denver in 1907 to Irish immigrant parents and worked as a newspaper reporter before becoming a freelance writer. Alongside children's books and short stories she wrote several plays; her breakthrough came in 1944 with the comedy Harvey, about a man and his invisible rabbit friend, which she spent roughly two years and about fifty drafts writing. The play won her the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and, with well over 1,700 performances, became one of the biggest Broadway hits of the 1940s. Chase, who raised three sons alongside her writing career, later turned increasingly to children's literature. She died in 1981.
