Biography

Martin Sperr was born in 1944 in Steinberg near Marklkofen in Lower Bavaria and died in 2002 in Landshut. He trained at acting schools in Munich, Vienna and Wiesbaden, and from 1965 worked at the Bremen municipal theatre, where his first major play, "Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern," premiered the following year. With "Landshuter Erzählungen" (1967) and "Münchner Freiheit" (1971) he completed his "Bavarian Trilogy," becoming, alongside Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Franz Xaver Kroetz, one of the key renewers of the critical "Volksstück." From 1967 he worked at the Munich Kammerspiele and later at the Munich Volkstheater, while also appearing as an actor in film and television. His awards include the Gerhart Hauptmann Prize (1965) and the Mülheim Playwrights' Prize (1978).
