Biography

Martin Sherman was born in Philadelphia on 22 December 1938 and studied dramatic art at Boston University and the Actors Studio. He achieved international recognition in 1979 with "Bent," premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London, about the persecution of gay men in Nazi Germany; the Tony-nominated play has since been performed in more than forty countries and was filmed in 1997. Sherman went on to write further plays such as "Rose" (1999) and the book for the musical "The Boy from Oz" (2003), repeatedly addressing outsider figures and discrimination in his work.
