Biography
Martin McDonagh was born in London in 1970 to Irish immigrant parents and grew up within a close-knit Irish community, spending childhood summers with relatives in Connemara. He left school at sixteen and, still in his twenties, made his name with two theatre trilogies: the Leenane Trilogy and the Aran Islands plays. In 2003 he broke with that pattern with "The Pillowman", his first stand-alone play not set in Ireland, which won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. He has built a parallel career as a filmmaker, and films such as "In Bruges", "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "The Banshees of Inisherin" have earned him multiple Academy Award nominations and wins.
