Martha Mechow

Biography

Martha Mechow was born in Berlin in 1996 and, at the age of 16, founded the directing collective Bäckerei Harmony together with Leonie Jenning. From 2017 to 2022 she studied film at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK). Since the 2021/22 season she and the collective have worked as house directors at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, where Bäckerei Harmony premiered works including „StEcHeN uNd stErBen“ in March 2023; she has also collaborated on productions by René Pollesch, Max Linz and Jan Koslowski. Her graduation film „Die ängstliche Verkehrsteilnehmerin“ (2023) premiered at FID Marseille, was named the HFBK's best graduate work and won the Grand Feature Film Award at the Diagonale and the Erste Bank Film Award at the Viennale. In 2024 she was filmmaker in residence at New York University's Deutsches Haus. Together with Luis August Krawen she wrote the play „Die Letzten werden die Allerletzten sein“ for the Berliner Ensemble.
