Biography

Marsha Norman was born in 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky, studied philosophy at Agnes Scott College and earned a master's degree from the University of Louisville. Her work with troubled adolescents at Central State Hospital in Kentucky fed into her first play, Getting Out, which premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1977–78 and was named best regional play of the season by the American Theatre Critics Association. She won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 'night, Mother, and in 1992 received a Tony Award for her book to the musical The Secret Garden, based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
