Biography
Markus Thielemann was born in Ludwigsburg in 1992 and grew up in Wietzen in Lower Saxony. He first studied geography and philosophy in Osnabrück and then literary writing at the Literaturinstitut of the University of Hildesheim. His first novel, “Zwischen den Kiefern”, came out with Katapult Verlag in 2021 and centres on the relationship between people and nature in the countryside. It was followed in 2024 by “Von Norden rollt ein Donner” (C.H. Beck), an anti-Heimat novel about a young shepherd of Heidschnucke sheep on the Lüneburg Heath, in which the return of the wolf, völkisch nationalist thinking and the region's suppressed Nazi past are intertwined. The book was shortlisted for the 2024 German Book Prize and was NDR's book of the month for July 2024. In September 2025 Theater Magdeburg premiered a stage version of the novel directed by Jan Friedrich.
