Biography

Mark Ravenhill was born in 1966 in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and studied Drama and English at the University of Bristol. He made his breakthrough as a playwright in 1996 with Shopping and Fucking, produced by Out of Joint and the Royal Court Theatre. Further plays followed for the Actors Touring Company (Faust Is Dead, Handbag), the National Theatre (Mother Clap's Molly House, Citizenship) and, as playwright in residence from 2012 to 2014, for the Royal Shakespeare Company, for which he wrote a new version of Bertolt Brecht's Galileo and the original play Candide. He has also worked in music theatre, including a new version of Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea and the libretto for the RSC musical The Boy in the Dress (2019), based on the novel by David Walliams.
