Biography
Mark-Anthony Turnage was born in Corringham, Essex, in 1960 and began studying at the junior department of the Royal College of Music at fourteen, later with Oliver Knussen, John Lambert and Gunther Schuller. From 1989 to 1993 he was Composer in Association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle, and later became the BBC Symphony Orchestra's first Associate Composer. Turnage's music combines contemporary compositional technique with jazz influences, notably from Miles Davis. His four full-length operas include "Greek" (1988), "The Silver Tassie" (2000), "Anna Nicole" (2011) and "Festen" (2025).
