Biography
Marin Držić was born in 1508 in Dubrovnik into a merchant family, a nephew of the poet Džore Držić, and received a humanist education under the Latinist Ilija Crijević, among others. In 1538 he travelled on a stipend from the Republic of Ragusa to study in Siena, where in 1541 he was elected head of the student college Domus Sapientiae and at times served as the university's pro-rector. Back in Dubrovnik, he wrote all of his surviving dramatic works between 1548 and 1558, including the comedies Novela od Stanca and Dundo Maroje and an adaptation of Euripides' Hecuba, while working as cathedral organist and later as a priest. In 1562 he moved to Venice, where he served as a bishop's chaplain until his death on 2 May 1567. Little recognized in his own lifetime, he is now regarded as the leading playwright of the Croatian Renaissance.
