Biography
Marieluise Fleißer was born on 22 November 1901 in Ingolstadt, the daughter of an ironware merchant, and attended convent schools before completing her Abitur in Regensburg in 1919. From 1924 she studied theatre studies in Munich without finishing the degree, and through Lion Feuchtwanger she met Bertolt Brecht, who both promoted and strongly shaped her writing. With "Fegefeuer in Ingolstadt" (1926) and "Pioniere in Ingolstadt" (1928/29) she established herself as an independent dramatic voice, though the theatre scandal Brecht helped provoke around the latter made her notorious in her hometown. After 1933 she largely withdrew from literary life and lived in Ingolstadt; her work was rediscovered only in the 1960s and 1970s, notably through Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She died in Ingolstadt on 2 February 1974.
