Biography

Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach was born on 13 September 1830 at Zdislawitz Castle in Moravia and died on 12 March 1916 in Vienna. Alongside Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, she ranks among the most important German-language women writers of the 19th century, known for psychologically precise stories about Austrian provincial society, including Krambambuli (1883) and Das Gemeindekind (1887). Besides prose, she also wrote for the stage, including the dialogued novella and later comedy adaptation Ohne Liebe. In 1898 she received Austria's Cross of Honour for Art and Science, and in 1900 became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna.
