Biography

Mareike Fallwickl was born in Hallein near Salzburg in 1983. After studying general and historical-comparative linguistics in Salzburg and attending a writing college in Munich, she worked as a proofreader and copywriter, among other jobs, before establishing herself as a freelance author. Her novel Dunkelgrün fast schwarz (2018) was longlisted for the Austrian Book Prize, followed in 2019 by Das Licht ist hier viel heller. Die Wut, die bleibt (2022), a novel about mental load, care work and female anger, became a bestseller; its stage version premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2023 and has since been performed at numerous theatres. Her novel Und alle so still appeared in 2024, and in 2025 the Burgtheater premiered her monologue Elisabeth! about the Austrian empress. Fallwickl is a founding member of PEN Berlin and is active in literary outreach with a focus on female narrative voices.
