1582 – 1643 · Italian

Biography

Marco da Gagliano was born in Florence on 1 May 1582 and received his musical training under, among others, Luca Bati. From 1602 he worked as a singing teacher at the church of San Lorenzo, before co-founding the Accademia degli Elevati in 1607 and, in the same year, taking up work for the House of Gonzaga in Mantua, where his opera "La Dafne" was premiered in 1608. From 1608 until his death in 1643 he served as maestro di cappella at the Medici court in Florence, responsible for both sacred and secular music. Besides "La Dafne" he composed further operas, numerous madrigals and church music, and was one of the most influential musicians of his generation, though his work fell into obscurity after his death.
