Biography
Marc-Antoine Charpentier was born in or near Paris in 1643 and studied, probably from around 1662, in Rome with Giacomo Carissimi, whose Italian style he brought into French music. After returning to Paris, he served for nearly twenty years from around 1670 in the household of Marie de Lorraine, Duchess of Guise, known as Mademoiselle de Guise, writing numerous sacred and secular works for her musicians. He also collaborated with Molière's theatre troupe and composed his only opera for the Académie Royale de Musique, Médée, in 1693. From 1698 until his death in 1704, he served as maître de musique at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
