Maja Zade

Biography

Maja Zade grew up in Germany and Sweden, studied English literature at the University of London and Queen’s University in Canada, and trained in theatre production at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. From 1997 to 1999 she worked as a senior reader at the Royal Court Theatre in London. In 1999 she joined the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz as a reader, went on to become a dramaturg there and has headed its dramaturgy department since the 2022/23 season; she has also worked as dramaturg for Michael Thalheimer at Dramaten in Stockholm and has taught at the Malmö Theatre Academy and the University of Edinburgh since 2012. As a translator she renders plays from German, Swedish and English, including works by Caryl Churchill, Lars Norén, Lars von Trier, Marius von Mayenburg and Roland Schimmelpfennig. Since 2019 she has written her own plays, all of which premiered at the Schaubühne: “status quo” and “abgrund” (2019), “ödipus” and “reden über sex” (2021), and “spinne” and “changes” (2024). With “spinne” she directed for the first time; her texts have been translated into several languages, including Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, French and English.
