Biography
Luigi Ricci was born on 8 July 1805 in Naples, where he also trained and composed his first opera while still a conservatory student in 1823. Works such as 'Chiara di Rosembergh' (1831) at La Scala and 'Un'avventura di Scaramuccia' (1834) brought him Europe-wide recognition, but an extravagant lifestyle left him in financial difficulty by 1837, and he spent several years as a conductor in Trieste, where he later led the world premiere of Verdi's 'Il corsaro'. In 1850 he completed the comic opera 'Crispino e la comare' together with his brother Federico, their greatest shared success. In his final years Ricci suffered from mental illness and died on 31 December 1859 in a psychiatric institution in Prague.
