Luigi Dallapiccola

1904 – 1975 · Italian

Biography

Luigi Dallapiccola was born in 1904 in Pisino, then part of Austria-Hungary (today Pazin, Croatia); his family's wartime internment during the First World War shaped the humanist stance against oppression that runs through his later work. He studied at the Florence Conservatory, where he taught piano from 1931 and composition from 1940, training composers including Luciano Berio. After encountering Schoenberg's music in the 1920s he taught himself twelve-tone technique and developed it into a personal, lyrical style that fused it with the Italian vocal tradition. With the operas 'Volo di notte' (1940), 'Il prigioniero' (1950) and his final work 'Ulisse' (1968), alongside central works such as the 'Quaderno musicale di Annalibera', he is regarded as a leading Italian composer of the postwar modern era. Dallapiccola died in Florence in 1975.
