Biography

Luigi Canepa was born on 15 January 1849 in Sassari and died there on 12 May 1914. He began flute lessons at age eight and went on to study at the conservatories of Milan and Naples, where at fifteen he was appointed a flute teacher. His first opera, 'David Rizio', premiered at the Teatro Carcano in Milan in 1872, followed by the success of 'I pezzenti' at La Scala in 1874. His greatest success came in 1879 with 'Riccardo III', praised among others by Giuseppe Verdi. Illness later forced him to retire to Sassari, where he founded the city's music school, orchestra and choir, all of which still bear his name today.
