Ludvig Holberg

1684 – 1754 · Danish-norwegisch

Biography

Ludvig Holberg was born on 3 December 1684 in Bergen, Norway, and was orphaned early; at the age of ten he briefly served as a soldier before turning to his studies and undertaking educational travels through the Netherlands, Germany, France and England. In 1717 he became professor of metaphysics in Copenhagen, adding rhetoric and history in 1720. Between 1722 and 1723 he wrote most of his roughly thirty comedies in rapid succession for the newly founded Komediehus at Lille Grønnegade in Copenhagen, laying the foundation of Danish-Norwegian stage literature. He also wrote the utopian satirical novel "Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum" as well as historical and philosophical works. He was raised to the nobility in 1747 and died on 28 January 1754 in Copenhagen.
