Biography
Ludger Vollmer was born in Berlin in 1961 and studied violin, viola and composition at the music academy in Weimar from 1984 to 1990. After seminars with Alfred Schnittke in Hamburg he continued his composition studies with Dimitri Terzakis in Leipzig from 1995 to 1999; he had previously played viola in orchestras and has worked as a freelance composer since 1993. He gained wider recognition in 2008 with the opera “Gegen die Wand” (Head-On), based on Fatih Akin’s film, which earned him the European Tolerance Prize in 2009; the Stuttgart production won the Der Faust theatre prize in 2011. Later works include “Lola rennt” (2013) after Tom Tykwer, the road opera “Tschick” (2017) and “Buddenbrooks” (2024) after Thomas Mann. His F.R.A.M.E. method relies on fast, rhythmically sharp scenes designed to reach younger audiences as well. In 2025 his opera “Rummelplatz”, after Werner Bräunig with a libretto by Jenny Erpenbeck, premiered in Chemnitz; since 2020 he has been president of the Hamburg State Music Council.
