Biography
Lucy Kirkwood was born in Leytonstone, London, in 1984 and studied English literature at the University of Edinburgh, where she wrote her first plays for the Edinburgh University Theatre Company. After early works such as Tinderbox (Bush Theatre, 2008), her Ibsen adaptation Hedda and her play about sex trafficking, it felt empty when the heart went at first but it is alright now (2009), she had her breakthrough in 2013 with Chimerica at the Almeida Theatre; the play about the relationship between the US and China since the Tiananmen Square protests won the 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Play. Later plays include The Children (Royal Court Theatre, 2016), which transferred to Broadway and was nominated for the Tony Award, Mosquitoes (National Theatre, 2017), The Welkin (2020), Rapture (2022) and The Human Body (Donmar Warehouse, 2024). For television she wrote for the series Skins, created The Smoke and adapted Chimerica as a miniseries. In 2018 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
