Biography
Lucas Rijneveld was born in 1991 in Nieuwendijk in the Dutch province of North Brabant and first published under the name Marieke Lucas Rijneveld; since 2023 he has used the name Lucas Rijneveld. He gave up studying Dutch in Utrecht in favour of the Schrijversvakschool writing school in Amsterdam and made his debut in 2015 with the poetry collection “Kalfsvlies”, which won the C. Buddingh’ Prize. His first novel “De avond is ongemak” (2018, German “Was man sät”) won the International Booker Prize in 2020 in Michele Hutchison's English translation “The Discomfort of Evening”; Rijneveld was the first Dutch winner and, at 29, the youngest. His second novel “Mijn lieve gunsteling” (2020, German “Mein kleines Prachttier”) received the F. Bordewijk Prize in 2021 and was brought to the stage by Ivo van Hove at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam in 2023. He has also published further poetry collections, including “Fantoommerrie” (2019), which won the Ida Gerhardt Poetry Prize in 2020, and “Komijnsplitsers” (2022).
