Louis Spohr

1784 – 1859 · German

Biography

Louis Spohr was born on April 5, 1784, in Brunswick and, alongside Niccolò Paganini, was already regarded in his youth as the leading violin virtuoso of his time. At the end of 1821 he accepted a post in Kassel, where from January 1822 he shaped the city's musical life for 35 years as court Kapellmeister and later General Music Director. His output includes ten symphonies, fifteen violin concertos, 36 string quartets, and oratorios and operas such as "Faust" (1816), "Zemire und Azor" (1819) and "Jessonda" (1823). Spohr is also considered a pioneer of modern conducting with a baton and the inventor of the violin chin rest, which he described in his 1833 "Violin School." He died in Kassel in 1859.
