Biography
Lot Vekemans was born in Oss in 1965, studied social geography in Utrecht and in 1993 completed training as a playwright at the ’t Colofon writing school in Amsterdam. At first she wrote alongside working as a theatre journalist, and from 1999 she concentrated entirely on drama. She often places figures from the shadow of well-known heroes at the centre, such as Antigone's sister Ismene in the monologue “Zus van” (Sister of, 2005) or the disciple in “Judas” (2007). Her play “Gif” (Poison, 2009), about a separated couple whose marriage broke apart after the death of their son, won her the Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs in 2010 and was released as the film “Poison” with Tim Roth and Trine Dyrholm in 2024. Later works include “Vals” (2013) and “Momentum” (2018), as well as the novels “Een bruidsjurk uit Warschau” (2012) and “De verdwenene” (2021). She received the Van der Vies Prize in 2005 and, in Cologne in 2016, the Ludwig Mülheims Theatre Prize for religious drama; she is regarded as the Dutch playwright most often performed abroad.
