Biography

Lorin Maazel was born in 1930 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris to American parents and grew up in Los Angeles. A child prodigy, he conducted publicly at the age of nine and first led the New York Philharmonic at eleven. His international career included posts as chief conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra (1972–1982), the Vienna State Opera (1982–1984), the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (1993–2002) and again the New York Philharmonic (2002–2009). With the opera 1984, based on George Orwell's novel and premiered in 2005 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, he presented his first work as a composer for the stage at the age of 75. Maazel died in 2014 in Virginia.
