Biography
Lorenzo Ferrero was born in Turin in 1951 and studied composition with Massimo Bruni and Enore Zaffiri at the Turin Conservatory from 1969 to 1973, as well as philosophy and aesthetics at the University of Turin, graduating in 1974 with a thesis on John Cage. He has written more than a dozen operas, including Salvatore Giuliano, Charlotte Corday and Risorgimento!, along with ballets, orchestral and chamber works in a distinctive, neo-tonal idiom that bridges classical tradition and popular culture. Ferrero directed, among others, the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago (1980–1984) and the Arena di Verona festival (1991–1994), and taught composition at the Milan Conservatory from 1980 to 2016. The New Grove Dictionary of Opera called him the most successful Italian opera composer of his generation.
