Biography
Leo Tolstoy was born on 9 September 1828 at the Yasnaya Polyana estate into a Russian aristocratic family. With the novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878) he established himself as one of the greatest novelists in world literature. Following a religious and moral crisis in the 1870s he turned to a radical ethic of nonviolence grounded in the Gospels, and it was during this later period that he wrote the drama The Power of Darkness. His criticism of the Church led to his excommunication by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1901. Tolstoy died on 20 November 1910 at the age of 82.
