Biography
Larysa Kosach, who wrote under the name Lesya Ukrainka, was born on 25 February 1871 in Zvyahel (now Novohrad-Volynskyi) in Volhynia and died on 1 August 1913 in Surami, Georgia. Suffering from bone tuberculosis since childhood, she spent much of her life seeking treatment abroad, in Italy, Egypt and the Caucasus, where several of her later works were written. Alongside Ivan Franko, she is regarded as the most important Ukrainian writer of her generation, and her verse plays developed a distinctive form she called the 'dramatic poem'. Her major works include The Babylonian Captivity, Cassandra and The Forest Song. She also translated European classics into Ukrainian and was politically engaged in the Ukrainian cause within the Russian Empire.
