Leonardo Vinci

1690 – 1730 · Italian

Biography

Leonardo Vinci was born around 1690 in Strongoli in the Kingdom of Naples and studied at the Poveri di Gesù Cristo conservatory in Naples under Gaetano Greco. From 1719 he first made his name with opere buffe in Neapolitan dialect before increasingly turning to opera seria. In 1725 he was appointed vice-maestro of the royal chapel in Naples, and from 1728 he also headed the Poveri di Gesù Cristo conservatory, where Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was among his pupils. His collaboration with the poet Pietro Metastasio, begun in 1726 and including several premiere settings, is regarded as a model for the close union of words and music in opera seria. Vinci died on 27 May 1730 in Naples, a few months after the premiere of his last opera, Artaserse, under circumstances contemporaries described as sudden and unexplained.
